The Finest In NC Residential Design

Posted on | October 29, 2013 | 3 Comments

I’ve said before that my pulse does quicken when my email contains unseen images of home interiors and exteriors, just waiting for me to open them. A few weeks ago, it was visually like Christmas and my birthday all wrapped up in a bow together. My cup, or my email, runneth over. I’d been asked by Charlotte residential designer Kevin Holdridge to be a judge for the 2013 North Carolina’s Finest In Residential Design Competition. – an exciting first time competition put on by the North Carolina Society of the American Institute of Building Design . The entries he sent me were numerous and the quality was truly outstanding.

Each entrant shared details about the existing site conditions, client guidelines, design objectives, project difficulties and design solutions. There were several categories and identities were of course anonymous. It’s too bad that I can’t show you pictures of all the entries, but I thought that I would share several of them here on North Carolina Design. I hope you enjoy. Winners will be announced at the organization’s November meeting. After that, I will update these with the names of those responsible for the projects. This competition will continue as an annual event for the organization.

The dining room above has such nice architectural details. It is part of the first home pictured above which is situated on a golf course, but I know not where!

This family room is part of a home that is less that 3,000 square feet. The designer’s clients were European and asked for a contemporary feel to the home, much like they would experience in their native country.

This is a Cotswold styled guest cottage designed on a steep site and was constructed prior to the main house being built on the property. It has all the amenities – which is wonderful since this is where the client will be living until the main house is built! Small and lovely.

I like the rustic charm – inside and outside – of the mountain home in the two pictures above. My favorite room in any home is the kitchen – and this one is very upscale, but the wide plank boards with the rough hewn beams in the ceiling really take that mountain feel to the next level.

Here’s a view from inside and outside of this lake home. Great views from most every room were a must for this client, along with ample room for entertaining. I think the goals were achieved!

This house above just has a welcoming feeling about it. The client wanted a home that would function as a large house, but in as small a package as possible. No rambling feeling to this one. Just nice!

If one of these homes particularly attracts your eye, let us know which one, and why.

Thank you for being a part of our first annual North Carolina Society of American Institute of Building Design – Finest in NC Design Competition. Next year we will be extending the competition into South Carolina as well in an effort to see some of the best designs from the best designers and architects that the area has to offer.
