The Challenge of a Condo Renovation

Any renovation that takes place in a condo typically requires Association approval. Not receiving approval for a key aspect of a project is always an opportunity as a designer to start thinking outside the box. The master bath in this North Durham condominium was definitely in need of an upgrade. Everything in the original space was builder spec and the clients wanted to expand the footprint by moving the shower to an adjoining closet. The hoped for renovation didn’t call for just any shower – our clients wanted a curveless shower.

It was certainly disappointing to us and especially our clients when the Association approved a shower, but not the curveless one. Rather than simply creating a space with 4 walls, it was time to get creative. We put a curve within the outside wall of the shower to provide interest within in the space. We also left the entry open which was another similar feature the curveless shower would have had.  Travertine tile was installed on the walls and the floor, with glass tiles on the ceiling. The polished travertine for the walls and the glass tiles were effective in making the space look larger.

The client is definitely enjoying the update and is pleased that we did not settle for 4 square walls. If you live in a condo, before starting any project, it’s always a good idea to know what changes require Association approval.
