Show & Tell – Amy Vermillion

Posted on | February 20, 2012 | 8 Comments

Today we introduce a new NC Design feature – Show & Tell. In a casual Q & A format, our participants share their thoughts on a professional and personal level. Leading off is Amy Vermillion of the Charlotte interior design firm, Martineau Vermillion Interior Design.

What Is Your Favorite Room In Your Home?

My bedroom (not pictured). I recently came up with a custom paint color for my bedroom that is similar to the interior of a seashell – a tan blush color that is really beautiful. I re-did the bedding in creams and stone using linens and silk. I absolutely love it. It’s just cozy. Your bedroom is the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night. If you’re waking up in a bedroom that you don’t love, it colors your day.

What Is Your Favorite Part Of Being An Interior Designer?

I would have to say it’s coming up with solutions to people’s interior problems. At the end of the day, your home is the place that allows you to get away from the business and demands of the outside world. It’s amazing what an impact a great interior will have on someone’s mood, their perception and how they think about their life – and I love being the purveyor of that happiness in the form of interior design.

If You Weren’t An Interior Designer, What Would You Do?

That’s probably a tie. I would be either a floral designer or run a book store. I absolutely love flowers, and I am an avid reader of everything –  both fiction and non-fiction.

What Is Your Design Pet Peeve?

People that don’t know if they like something – they just follow along blindly. I call them “Style Lemmings.” They go for it because everyone else does. Oh my gosh, the Style Lemmings drive me crazy!  Instead of this – find your own style, do your own thing. Be brave enough to like what you like! Be true to yourself. In the end, you’ll be happier.

Do You Personally Collect Anything?

I collect little boxes. I’ve collected them since I was a young girl. Over the years, my tastes have definitely become more sophisticated. One of my favorites was a gift from my parents – an amazing Marquetry box from Italy that dates to the 40’s. When traveling in Israel, I acquired a truly beautiful box inlaid with bone and mother of pearl. While in Khan el-Khalili, the main marketplace in Cairo, I picked up my absolute favorites – 2 sterling silver boxes inlaid with mother of pearl.

Thanks Ellen. I loved Show & Tell as a child and I think the grown up version here is going to be a big hit. I am also so taken by the term, “Style Lemmings.” You heard it here first!

I really enjoyed photographing these rooms for you Amy – Always a pleasure. I think we make beautiful photography together. When do I get to photograph a private jet?

The question about collecting is interesting: so often what “we” collect becomes clutter. Yet when we look at photos of beautiful rooms, etc in magazines or online, there is very little clutter. Thank goodness for closets!

I was super impressed with your column. I have just started to learn what I would enjoy in my home. I have spent 47 years as a professional cook and baker. Now is my time. I love to sew, in fact, that is one of my first loves – that and designing things for my home. I am repainting my living room, in colors that most people would say are not me. I fell in love with the combination and when I am finished I will send the Pictures. Thank you for encouragement.
    Cat.
