Fine Linens — Slip Into Something Sublime

Posted on | June 15, 2012 | 4 Comments

Fine linens are so much more than mere sheets. They’re an experience; an indulgent treat for the senses that give you something wonderful to look forward to each night. Superbly smooth and decadently soft, sliding into fine linens is a reward like no other after a long, stressful day.

While color is the new buzz word in design, white linens are clean, crisp, and call to mind a type of classic and luxurious elegance. To find out more about what’s new in white linens, we consulted two experts: Jeanne Clay of Lavender And Lace in Raleigh and Debbie Huffman of Dolce Dimora Fine Linens in Greensboro.

“White linens are so important,” Jeanne notes. “The South loves white linens. White shines all the time. You can have everything in white linens, from clean and classic styles, to crisp contemporary styles, to ornate jaquards and damasks. You can have white on white sateen and cotton stripes, Italian swirl designs, floral French designs–or go all out and do luxurious Victorian designs complete with lace and embroidered ruffles.”

The timeless quality of white linens has as much appeal now as ever. “Today’s most popular style is hotel-inspired white-on-white sheets with classic stitching around the edging in a single color,” notes Debbie. “It’s not necessarily a contemporary look, but a clean look that evokes the feeling of staying in a luxury hotel.”

The newest and most luxurious of fine linens are those that soothe the conscience as much as they do the skin. Made from bamboo or wood fiber, eco-friendly sheets have many benefits—not the least of which is the fact that they’re made with sustainable materials. “Eco-friendly sheets are anti-microbial, antibacterial, and they have wicking properties that keep skin dry and fresh,” Debbie explains. “And believe it or not, they are our softest sheets.”

For a signature touch, many people choose to monogram their sheets. “Colored monograms on white sheets are fabulous,” says Jeanne. “Monogramming can be done in any way imaginable, from very plain styles, to curly Q’s, to letters embellished with flowers. There’s nothing prettier than a white sheet with a monogrammed center. It’s like the icing on the cake.”

Maintaining a crisp, brilliant white on fine linens can be a challenge. Both Jeanne and Debbie recommend washing linens in cold water in a chemical-free linen wash and drying them with no heat. For extra sparkle, rinse the sheets in lemon juice and stretch them out in the sun. Above all, give them the utmost of special care “I always say, treat your fine linens like you would your best lingerie,” Jeanne advises.

Fine linens may be a luxury, but they are a dreamy and well-deserved gift to give yourself. Debbie sums it up best: “You spend one-third of your life in bed. It should be a soft, welcoming and luxurious space.”

Aren’t Beds Beautiful? They photograph so well. Love the lighting in these shots! And the photographer kept the whites neutral and the color constant from one side of the bed to the other. They all look like day light for the most part (and I bet they’re not). What a great way to end your day.

I don’t even own a dryer any more! My sheets (and everything else) are so much better when line dried… and then ironed. Yes, fine bed linens are a must!
